The lavender of Les Baux-de-Provence colors the roads by early summer, and the Alpilles are bathed in a fragrance that no city can reproduce. From the Château des 3 Fontaines, nestled in Provence at the foot of Mount Ventoux, every excursion becomes an unforgettable escape. Perched villages, lavender fields of Les Baux-de-Provence, and millennial traditions shape an unforgettable itinerary.
A Provençal estate as a starting point
Choosing your accommodation is already choosing the pace of your stay. From the estate, the Alpilles are within cycling distance, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue is twenty minutes away, and Gordes is barely further. This geographical position is no coincidence: the Luberon and Vaucluse form an arc of cultural and natural riches for which the château is an ideal base.
Our resort offering was precisely designed for this. You return in the evening from a day on the lavender route, the sunset tints the stones of the château in pink and gold, and the terrace awaits you. This is not just a bed: it is a Provençal living base, elegant and restful.
Lavender in Les Baux-de-Provence, first stop on the purple route
Les Baux-de-Provence is one of the most photographed villages in France, perched on a limestone spur from which the gaze stretches all the way to the Alpilles. But it is the surrounding territory, with its lavender fields of Les Baux-de-Provence that border the roads in July, giving the getaway its full sensory dimension. The official route of the Lavender Road also crosses several sectors of the Alpilles, classifying this terroir among the most emblematic of Provence.
We recommend leaving early in the morning, when the light is still golden and the roads are deserted. The most spectacular fields are best discovered on foot or by bike, slowly. Allow at least an hour to wander around the village of Les Baux, visit the medieval citadel, and head over to the Carrières des Lumières for an absolutely breathtaking visual experience.
Gordes, the jewel of the Luberon
Gordes stands out. This perched village, ranked among the most beautiful in France, dominates the Luberon plain with quiet authority. Its dry-stone alleys, discreet fountains, Sénanque Abbey, and famous rows of lavender photographed the world over: everything here invites you to slow down. Allow at least half a day to soak in the atmosphere without rushing.
The Sénanque Abbey deserves a special mention. Founded in 1148, this Cistercian monument was already cultivating lavender long before tourism made it an icon. The visit, intimate and silent, contrasts delightfully with the bustle of the weekend Provençal markets.
Roussillon and its ochre cliffs
About twenty minutes from Gordes, Roussillon offers a spectacle of a completely different nature: cliffs of red, orange, and yellow ochre that burn under the midday sun. The Ochre Trail can be hiked in less than two hours and remains one of the most photogenic hikes in the Vaucluse. Sunsets there are particularly intense in summer, when the warm tones of the rock match those of the sky.
Lavender activities in Les Baux-de-Provence and Vaucluse markets
Provence lives to the rhythm of its markets. They are what reveal the soul of a region better than any guide: the scents of soap, the sharp purple of lavender bouquets, the yellow of Cavaillon melons, the goat cheeses lined up on their racks. The Vaucluse Provençal markets are not tourist sets; they are alive, inhabited, true to themselves for generations.
L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue holds a special place. Every Sunday morning, the town transforms into a labyrinth of antique dealers and local producers, bordered by the crystal-clear arms of the Sorgue. It is the Sunday rendezvous that we recommend without hesitation to all our guests. Arrive before 9 AM to experience the market building in momentum and choose the finest pieces from the antique dealers. The town has more than three hundred antique shops and galleries, making it one of the premier antique markets in Europe.
Itinerary suggestions from the estate
Two days are enough to taste the essentials, three allow you to breathe. Here is an itinerary we gladly suggest to our visitors.
- Day 1: Early departure for Les Baux-de-Provence and its blooming surroundings, lunch in a local farmhouse, afternoon at the Carrière des Lumières, return to the castle for aperitifs on the terrace.
- Day 2: Perched villages route (Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux), picnic in the Luberon park, free evening.
- Day 3: Sunday market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, boat ride on the Sorgue, lazy afternoon at the estate before departure.
This itinerary can be adapted according to your desires and the season. Outside the summer period, autumn markets and colorful vineyards offer a Provence that is just as generous, simply different.
Back to the castle: when the estate becomes the most beautiful of memories
Each evening, the Château des 3 Fontaines brings you back to the essentials. The 19th-century building, carefully renovated, preserves the memory of the daylight and the stories of those who live within its walls for the duration of a stay. After a day on the roads of Provence, returning to its stone walls, its park, and its silence has something irreplaceable about it.
If you are planning to organize an event or celebration here, please note that the estate is made entirely private. Wedding, seminar, family reunion: every project finds in this setting a natural scenography that no convention center could match. The estate's photo gallery will give you a first glimpse of what Provençal light does to these stones, these gardens, these moments.
Provence cannot really be explained. It is experienced, and it leaves its mark. Come and see for yourself what the Château des 3 Fontaines can offer as a base for your finest Provençal getaways.
